Conventional Instruction and
Project-Based Learning Opportunities

we are developing more opportunities for project-based learning in the upper grade levels to optimize student engagement, skill development, and cross-curricular learning.

While familiar, conventional methods of teaching are still the main learning structure for 2nd through 6th grade students at St. Mary’s,

Conventional teaching methods

Students transition from Montessori-inspired classrooms to a more traditional curriculum in 2nd and 3rd grade while still receiving individualized support. Small class sizes allow teachers to know each child personally, address challenges, and provide both one-on-one and whole-group instruction. The focus is on achieving grade-level proficiency in reading, writing, and math while fostering faith and virtue. The well-rounded curriculum also includes Science, Handwriting, Social Studies, Music, Art, and Physical Education.

What is Project-Based Learning?

With the teacher providing guidance, students work in groups or independently to define the scope of the project by proposing questions or problems to solve, design the methods used in the PBL, and carry out the work to complete the project. Students who struggle to engage with learning through conventional approaches often thrive within the PBL structure with its hands-on, active approach to learning.

As they work on their project, students apply other core subjects such as research and writing, interviewing and speaking, video production, and math and science applications.

As a learning method provided to our 4th, 5th and 6th grade students, Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method where students gain skills and knowledge by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a real problem, complex question, or challenge.

Builds independence, critical thinking, and a love of learning

Kind words from parents

“…On a spiritual level,St. Mary’s school has impacted our children’s development of kindness, prayerfulness, and patience. On an academic level we have especially been pleased with the Montessori program as the children, no matter what level they are at, are engaged, growing, and learning.”
